Mini feature: Reducing the cost of automation
For many companies in the manufacturing and processing sectors, the goal of total automation represents something of a Holy Grail: it is desirable, but is often only achievable at a cost that outweighs the benefits. In this feature, Andy Parker-Bates and John Hill of the Automation Group of Parker Hannifin discuss the latest modular automation that can offer the levels of performance and functionality required to develop and cost-justify even the most complex of systems.

Interfacial gradient priors-based geodesic geometric flows for 3D medical image segmentation
3D medical image segmentation refers to the extraction of interesting regions (including normal anatomy structures and lesion tissues) from 3D data that are "heaped" by 2D medical sectional image sequences. The 3D image segmentation of human tissues and organs is an important premise for medical image analysis and diagnosis, and is also a key research issue in 3D visualization technology for medical images. In this paper, a new segmentation method for 2D image sequences is presented.

New products: Cranfield develops revolutionary technology for manufacturing micro-scale devicesCranfield University has developed new technology that could significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of complex micro-mechanical and micro-optical devices. The project, part of a €3.2 million research consortium entitled "Quality to Micro" and supported by the European Union, addressed some of the key issues with existing micro-fabrication processes which are limited by the conflicting requirements of different materials.

Environment and safety: Albemarle announces breakthrough in flame retardant materials technologySpecialty chemicals maker Albemarle Corporation has announced an important advance in flame retardant technology. Flame retardants used to enhance durable plastics in many consumer and commercial products, from textiles and electronics to airplane and automobile interiors, are vital tools for reducing the risk of fire death and injury for hundreds of millions of people while saving billions of dollars in property damage around the world. Albemarle's new Earthwise brand, GreenArmor™ is a unique, organic flame retardant which will provide better performance across a wide range of applications, while improving the sustainability of the plastic resins used in many consumer products.

2010 International Conference on Material and Manufacturing Technology (ICMMT 2010)

17th Sep 2010 to 19th Sep 2010
Location: Chogqing, People's Republic of China

ICMMT 2010 aims to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, academicians and industrial professionals from all over the world to present their research results and development activities in material and manufacturing technology. This conference provides opportunities for delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face-to-face, to establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration. Submitted conference papers will be reviewed by technical committees of the conference. All accepted papers of ICMMT 2010 will be published in the Advanced Materials Research Journal, which will be indexed by EI Compendex.
